Adding Breadth – Protection Beyond Burglars

When You Want that Added Peace of Mind

Security brings it’s own level of peace of mind, as knowing you are secure lets you enjoy wherever you are without worrying about your home.

But there is more to worry about in your home than just intrusion. Environmental concerns bring some challenges for home owners. Some of the most common devices for environmental monitoring are listed below;

This is Not A Campfire

Campfires keep you comfortable and warm. Personally I believe marshmallows were invented specifically to be used with a campfire.

If a fire finds an opportunity to get into your home, however, it will take it. And your home can look like this very quickly.

Smoke detectors that are hard wired in your home are great at letting you know you need to get out of the house before the fire spreads to much. They are building regulation and you must have them.

Insurance Providers have taken that a step further;

Your alarm system is capable of monitoring your home for the threat of fire as well. Many Insurance Providers acknowledge a 24/7 monitored smoke alarm with discounts on your premiums. Ask them about it. They’ll tell you.

They call it the Silent Killer

We call it Carbon Monoxide. It’s been known to cause long term health concerns, as well as death, in homes and apartments when left unchecked. CO is odourless, colourless, and the symptoms of CO poisoning are very similar to those of the flu.

It’s already law to have a CO detector located by any sleeping area in a home, as well as near any potential leak hazard (Fireplaces, Furnaces etc).

For added protection, it is recommended to hook a monitored CO detector to your alarm system. This makes sure that not only are you alerted to a leak in your home, but that you have responders en-route while you exit the home.

The device looks like this;

Adding Fluidity to Security

I’ve shown you this before;

It’s a flood sensor. It looks for, you guessed it… flooding.

Anyone who has ever had a flood knows how damaging it can be. Just like fire, water can mess up your home badly, and early warning to a building water issue can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars. Having it monitored can potentially save your insurance cost as well. Again, ask your insurance provider what they recommend.

The Trifecta

Do you know what this is? That’s okay. I didn’t either. Until we brought in the Helix.

This is what’s called a “Home Disaster Sensor”. They call it that for good reason. It provides early warning to, yes, potential disasters.

Essentially the device is designed with 3 different sensors; Flood/Moisture, Freeze and Overheat. It’s main application? Your furnace, and your air conditioning. ‘Nuff said.

We were ecstatic to see this device. We think every home owner will be.

These Are Not Devices Required to Make Your Alarm Work

Not at all. These are all add-ons to your security that allow your alarm to give you some added value. But the value added becomes invaluable when a disaster, as every home owner will inevitably have at some point, is not allowed to run its course.

These devices work regardless of whether the system is armed or not. Really, you could even have a system dedicated to just environmental monitoring.

To get the most out of these devices they need to be monitored 24/7. Ask your Insurance Provider about the insurance cost benefit, and then let’s run that up against the cost of expanding your alarm system or installing something new.

And rest assured. None of these devices increase your monitoring cost. At all.

As usual, comment section below. Have a question or want a quote? Let us know in the form to the right or below, or give us a shout out on Facebook. We’re always glad to hear from you.

NOTE: Devices pictured are from the Helix line of devices. Comparable devices for existing alarm systems may differ in appearance and performance. Knowing the model you have will help us help you better.
